Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, present in both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing (e.g., mesothelial) tissues. At least 20 different CKs have been identified.
CKs are classified into two types:
- Type I (acidic polypeptides)
- Type II (basic polypeptides)
Cytokeratin 14 belongs to the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and pairs with keratin 5. It serves as a marker distinguishing stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells and is useful for identifying squamous cell carcinomas. It is also considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. Each epithelial cell expresses at least one acidic and one basic keratin family member.
