Target Information

The cathepsin family of proteolytic enzymes includes several diverse classes of proteases:

• Cysteine proteases: Cathepsins B, L, H, K, S, O
• Aspartyle proteases: Cathepsins D, E
• Serine protease: Cathepsin G

Cathepsins participate in cellular metabolism, peptide biosynthesis, and protein degradation.
Cathepsin A, a serine carboxypeptidase, forms a high molecular weight lysosomal complex with β-galactosidase (β-gal) and α-neuraminidase (Neu1).
It protects β-gal and Neu1 from intralysosomal proteolysis.
Deficiencies in Cathepsin A lead to deficiencies in β-gal and Neu1, causing galactosialidosis, a lysosomal storage disorder.
The human Cathepsin A gene maps to chromosome 20q13.12.
