Target Information
Ep-CAM (epithelial adhesion molecule, epithelial specific antigen, ESA) is a transmembrane glycoprotein expressed in epithelial tissues (~40 kDa).
It functions as a calcium-independent epithelial cell adhesion molecule, influencing cell cycle, proliferation, and metabolism through induction of proto-oncogene c-myc and cell cycle regulators cyclin A and E.
Ep-CAM-mediated adhesions negatively regulate cadherin-mediated adhesions, affecting epithelial differentiation and growth.
Overexpression of Ep-CAM is associated with increased epithelial proliferation and is highly expressed in human carcinomas, serving as a marker for epithelial lineage tumors.
Ep-CAM is localized on the baso-lateral surface of most simple epithelia and carcinoma types, and can distinguish adenocarcinomas from pleural mesotheliomas.
