Target Information
Osteopontin is an arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD)-containing glycoprotein that interacts with integrins and CD44 as major receptors. It plays roles in bone mineralization, cell adhesion, migration, chronic inflammatory diseases, and transformation processes.
Proteolytic cleavage by thrombin and matrix metalloproteinases near the RGD sequence modulates its function and integrin binding properties. Thrombin-cleaved fragments are overexpressed in malignant glial tumors, providing a survival advantage and serving as substrates for plasmin and cathepsin D.
