ZEB1 (Zinc finger E-box-binding homeobox 1)은 전사 억제 인자로 작용하며, interleukin-2 (IL-2) 유전자 발현을 억제합니다.
ZEB1은 세포 유형과 cDNA 양에 따라 ATP1A1 유전자의 프로모터 활성을 조절하며, E-cadherin 프로모터를 억제하고 SMARCA4/BRG1을 모집하여 상피-중간엽 전이(EMT)를 유도합니다.
또한, CTBP1과 함께 BCL6 전사를 억제하고, 신경분화 과정에서 RCOR1 전사 활성화를 억제하면서 신경 분화를 양성 조절합니다.
ZEB1 유전자의 돌연변이는 각막이상증(Posterior polymorphous corneal dystrophy, Fuchs endothelial dystrophy 등)과 관련이 있습니다.
