Target Information
Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are members of the mitochondrial anion carrier protein family. UCPs separate oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis, dissipating energy as heat (mitochondrial proton leak). They facilitate anion transfer from the inner to outer mitochondrial membrane and proton return transfer. UCPs reduce mitochondrial membrane potential in mammalian cells. Expression of UCPs is tissue-specific, and the exact mechanism of H⁺/OH⁻ transfer is not fully understood. UCPs contain three homologous protein domains of MACPs. The UCP1 gene is expressed only in brown adipose tissue, which functions to produce heat.
