Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs can be identified. Most CKs are classified as either type I (acidic polypeptides) or type II (basic polypeptides).
Keratin 14, a type I low molecular weight keratin, pairs with keratin 5 and is a marker distinguishing stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells. It is valuable for identifying squamous cell carcinomas and is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas.
Both acidic and basic CK families are expressed in all epithelial cells.
