Target Information
SOAT1 (sterol O-acyltransferase-1), also known as ACAT1, is a homotetrameric enzyme that catalyzes the formation of cholesterol esters from cholesterol and long-chain fatty acyl-CoA. The human SOAT1 gene maps to chromosome 1 and encodes a protein localized to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in various tissues, including liver, kidney, adrenal glands, and macrophages.
SOAT1 plays a critical role in cellular cholesterol homeostasis, foam cell formation, and atherosclerosis progression. Inhibitors of SOAT1 have been studied for potential therapeutic use in atherosclerosis.
SOAT2 (sterol O-acyltransferase-2), also known as ACAT2, participates in lipoprotein assembly and cholesterol esterification, primarily in intestinal cells. Deficiency in SOAT2 has been associated with severe mental retardation and hypotonia.
