Oil red O
Details
Oil Red O belongs to a family of lipophilic or fatty acid soluble dyes. These dyes are used to demonstrate triglycerides, lipids and lipoproteins. Since the dye is fat-soluble, it has greater affinity for the lipoid substances compared to the organic solvent in which it is dissolved. Hence, when exposed to a sample, the dye migrates into the lipids resulting in staining of the lipids. The staining can be viewed with transmitted light and has fluorescent properties when excited by far-red light.
