Target Information
Hepatocyte Growth Factor (HGF) regulates cell growth, motility, and morphogenesis via activation of a tyrosine kinase signaling cascade upon binding to the proto-oncogenic c-Met receptor.
It is secreted by mesenchymal cells and acts as a multifunctional cytokine primarily on epithelial cells.
HGF stimulates mitogenesis, cell motility, and matrix invasion, playing a central role in angiogenesis, tumorigenesis, and tissue regeneration.
The inactive precursor is cleaved by serine proteases into a 69-kDa alpha-chain and a 34-kDa beta-chain, linked by a disulfide bond to form the active heterodimeric molecule.
Although belonging to the plasminogen subfamily of S1 peptidases, HGF has no detectable protease activity.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
