Voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels are essential components of potassium currents in the heart and central nervous system.
- In the heart, Kv4 channels contribute to the repolarization phase of the action potential.
- In the brain, they prevent reverse-propagation of action potentials.
Kv4 channels are associated with calcium-binding proteins known as KChIPs (Kv channel interacting proteins).
KChIPs bind to the cytoplasmic amino termini of Kv4 alpha-subunits and modulate their function.
Known KChIP family members include:
- KChIP1: Expressed in the brain
- KChIP2: Expressed in brain, heart, and lung; has three isoforms (a, b, c)
- KChIP3: Also known as calsenilin and DREAM; expressed in brain and testis
