Target Information
This gene produces several transcript variants differing in their first exons. At least three alternatively spliced variants encode distinct proteins, two of which function as inhibitors of CDK4 kinase. Another variant encodes an ARF protein that stabilizes p53 by interacting with MDM2, preventing p53 degradation. Despite structural differences, these isoforms share a role in G1 cell cycle control. Mutations or deletions in this gene are common in various tumors, highlighting its role as a tumor suppressor gene.
