Target Information

Synaptophysin is a calcium-binding integral membrane glycoprotein found in presynaptic vesicles of nearly all neurons. It contains four transmembrane domains and forms a complex with dynamin at high calcium concentrations, suggesting a role in synaptic vesicle endocytosis.
It also contributes to the regulation of short- and long-term synaptic plasticity and serves as a widely used marker for nerve terminals and neuroendocrine tumor differentiation.
Mutations in the Synaptophysin gene have been associated with X-linked mental retardation (MRX96).
