Target Information
Kinesins are a large family of microtubule-dependent motor proteins responsible for the intracellular distribution of organelles, vesicles, and macromolecular complexes. Members of the heterotrimeric kinesin II family, including KIF3A, KIF3B, and KIF3C, mediate anterograde transport of membrane-bound organelles in neurons and melanosomes, as well as transport between the endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi apparatus. KIF3A plays a crucial role in cilia and flagella morphogenesis, neurogenesis, and left-right axis determination. Loss of KIF3A function in mouse photoreceptors leads to apoptotic cell death, indicating its essential role in kinesin II-mediated transport for proper cell fate.
