Target Information
This gene encodes a protein that is a member of the SUMO (small ubiquitin-like modifier) protein family. It functions similarly to ubiquitin, binding to target proteins as part of a post-translational modification system. Unlike ubiquitin, which targets proteins for degradation, SUMO proteins are involved in nuclear transport, transcriptional regulation, apoptosis, and protein stability. The protein becomes active only after the last two amino acids at the carboxy-terminus are cleaved. Numerous pseudogenes and splice variants exist.
