Target Information
AMPK beta-1 is a regulatory subunit of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). AMPK is a heterotrimer consisting of an alpha catalytic subunit and non-catalytic beta and gamma subunits. AMPK acts as an energy-sensing enzyme that monitors cellular energy status.
In response to metabolic stress, AMPK becomes activated and phosphorylates key enzymes such as acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR), which regulate fatty acid and cholesterol biosynthesis.
The beta-1 subunit may positively regulate AMPK activity. Myristoylation and phosphorylation of this subunit influence enzyme activity and cellular localization. It may also function as an adaptor molecule mediating AMPK complex assembly.
