Target Information
Apoptosis Inducing Factor (AIF) is involved in chromatin condensation and DNA fragmentation during apoptosis. It localizes in mitochondria and translocates to the nucleus upon apoptotic induction, promoting release of apoptogenic proteins such as cytochrome c and caspase-9. AIF is highly conserved between human and mouse and widely expressed. Mutations in the AIF gene are associated with combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency 6, leading to mitochondrial encephalomyopathy. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants and a pseudogene on chromosome 10.
