Target Information

Calnexin (also known as IP90, p88, p90) is an approximately 90 kDa integral membrane protein of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). It functions as a molecular chaperone, assisting in the proper folding and assembly of polypeptides into multisubunit proteins.

Calnexin associates with MHC class I heavy chains, partial T cell receptor complexes, and B cell membrane immunoglobulin, but not with completed receptor complexes. It retains incompletely or improperly folded proteins in the ER.

Soluble ER resident proteins often contain the KDEL sequence for retention, whereas membrane-bound proteins like calnexin lack KDEL but possess positively charged cytosolic residues ensuring ER localization.

Calnexin structure includes:

• ER luminal domain: 461 amino acids
• Transmembrane segment: 22 amino acids
• Cytoplasmic tail: 89 amino acids
