Target Information

Calnexin (also known as IP90, p88, and p90) is an approximately 90 kDa integral membrane protein of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER).
It functions as a molecular chaperone, assisting in the proper folding and assembly of polypeptides into multisubunit proteins.

Calnexin associates with MHC class I heavy chains, partial complexes of the T cell receptor, and B cell membrane immunoglobulin, but not with completed receptor complexes. It retains incompletely or improperly folded proteins in the ER.

Soluble ER resident proteins such as GRP78, GRP94, and protein disulfide isomerase contain a KDEL sequence for ER retention. Integral ER membrane proteins like calnexin lack KDEL but possess positively charged cytosolic residues ensuring ER localization.
