Target Information

Calnexin (also known as IP90, p88, p90) is an approximately 90 kDa integral membrane protein of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER).
It functions as a molecular chaperone, aiding in the proper folding and assembly of polypeptides and multisubunit proteins.
Calnexin associates with MHC class I heavy chains, partial T cell receptor complexes, and B cell membrane immunoglobulins, but not with fully assembled receptors.
It retains incompletely or improperly folded proteins within the ER.
Unlike soluble ER proteins containing the KDEL sequence, calnexin lacks this motif but contains positively charged cytosolic residues ensuring ER retention.
The protein has a large ER luminal domain (461 amino acids), a transmembrane region (22 amino acids), and a cytoplasmic tail (89 amino acids).
