Target Information

Dyneins are multi-subunit, high molecular weight ATPases that interact with microtubules to generate force by converting the chemical energy of ATP into mechanical energy of movement. Cytoplasmic and axonemal dynein complexes are minus end-directed motors responsible for intracellular cargo transport and ciliary motion.

Cytoplasmic dynein consists of approximately 12 subunits, including two heavy chains, two intermediate chains for cargo anchoring, and several smaller intermediate and light chains. It plays essential roles in organelle transport and centrosome assembly. The carboxy-terminus of dynein is conserved for motility, while the amino-terminal regions vary. Dynein activity is regulated by associated proteins such as Dynactin, LIS1, and Nudel (nudE-like).
