Target Information
PCNA (Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen) is essential for DNA replication and involved in DNA excision and mismatch repair pathways. It binds to CDK inhibitor p21, structure-specific endonucleases Fen1 and XPG, and DNA cytosine 5-methyltransferase (MCMT).
PCNA serves as a marker of proliferating cells and is useful for assessing tumor proliferation status. It is expressed in early G1 and S phases, localized in the nucleus, and acts as a cofactor of DNA polymerase delta, forming a homotrimer that increases processivity during DNA replication.
Upon DNA damage, PCNA is ubiquitinated and participates in the RAD6-dependent DNA repair pathway. Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified, and pseudogenes exist on chromosome 4 and the X chromosome.
