Target Information

Osteopontin (OPN) is a 34 kDa extracellular matrix protein with a cell-binding domain. Initially identified as a major component of the non-collagenous bone matrix, it is now known to be present in various adult tissues and body fluids.
It plays roles in bone mineralization, cell adhesion, migration, inflammatory disease, and transformation. Proteolytic cleavage near the integrin-binding Arg-Gly-Asp sequence by thrombin and matrix metalloproteinases modulates its function and integrin-binding properties.
Thrombin-cleaved fragments of OPN are overexpressed in malignant glial tumors, providing a survival advantage and serving as substrates for plasmin and cathepsin D.
