Specificity Comments:
Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase-1 (SOD1) is a cytosolic enzyme that scavenges oxygen free radicals and requires copper and zinc binding for activity. It catalyzes the dismutation of oxygen radicals to hydrogen peroxide and also exhibits peroxidase and hydroxyl radical–generating activities. SOD1 functions as a homodimer and is ubiquitously expressed in somatic cells.
Defects in the SOD1 gene are linked to neurological diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Down syndrome, and Alzheimer’s disease. In familial ALS, mutations in SOD1 can lead to loss of zinc binding, reduced scavenging activity, and increased neurotoxicity and motor neuron death.

Target Information

SOD1 (superoxide dismutase) binds copper and zinc ions and is one of two isozymes that eliminate free superoxide radicals in the body. This soluble cytoplasmic protein acts as a homodimer to convert harmful superoxide radicals into molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. The other isozyme is mitochondrial.
Mutations in the SOD1 gene are associated with familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Rare transcript variants have also been reported.
