Product Specific Information
This antibody reacts with human alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP), a 70 kDa oncofetal antigen. AFP is a major fetal plasma protein but is not present in healthy adult tissues. Elevated AFP concentrations in adult plasma may indicate hepatocellular carcinoma or teratoblastoma, while high concentrations in amniotic fluid may suggest severe congenital defects in a fetus.
The MA1-19342 anti-alpha Fetoprotein antibody (clone AFP-11) has been successfully paired as the coating antibody in a sandwich ELISA with detection antibody MA1-19178 (clone AFP-01).
Recommended Protocols:
- Immunohistochemistry (Paraffin): Heat-mediated antigen retrieval (sodium citrate buffer); mAb incubation 1 hour at room temperature; detection by DAB.
- Western Blot: Non-reducing conditions.
Target Information
AFP (Alpha Fetoprotein) is a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac, intestinal tract, and liver during fetal life. AFP expression in adults is often associated with hepatoma or teratoma, though hereditary persistence of AFP may occur without pathology. AFP is considered the fetal counterpart of serum albumin; both genes are located in tandem on chromosome 4.
AFP exists in monomeric, dimeric, and trimeric forms and can bind copper, nickel, fatty acids, and bilirubin. AFP levels in amniotic fluid are used to screen for spina bifida and anencephaly. Elevated serum AFP is associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), teratoblastoma, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, and germ cell neoplasms.
