This antibody reacts with an extracellular epitope of CD16 antigen, a low affinity receptor for aggregated IgG (FcgammaRIII antigen).
CD16 exists in two different isoforms:

• CD16a (FcgammaRIIIA): 50–65 kDa, expressed on NK cells, monocytes, and macrophages
• CD16b (FcgammaRIIIB): 48 kDa, mainly expressed on neutrophils

Target Information

CD16 encodes a receptor that recognizes the Fc portion of immunoglobulin G and is involved in the clearance of immune complexes from the circulation and other immune functions such as cellular mediated cytotoxicity and enhancement of virus infections.
This gene (FCGR3A) shares high similarity with FCGR3B located on chromosome 1.

• FCGR3A: Expressed on NK cells as an integral membrane glycoprotein anchored through a transmembrane peptide
• FCGR3B: Expressed on polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) anchored through a phosphatidylinositol (PI) linkage

Mutations in FCGR3A have been associated with immunodeficiency 20 and susceptibility to recurrent viral infections, systemic lupus erythematosus, and alloimmune neonatal neutropenia.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
Diseases associated with FCGR3A include Immunodeficiency 20 and Herpes Zoster.
