Target Information
MAOB (Monoamine Oxidase B), also known as MAO, BRAIN, AMINE OXIDASE (FLAVIN-CONTAINING) B, is encoded by the MAOB gene located on Xp11.3.
This enzyme catalyzes oxidative deamination of biogenic and xenobiotic amines, playing a key role in metabolism of neuroactive and vasoactive amines in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues.
MAO-B preferentially degrades benzylamine and phenylethylamine, and also dopamine. Inhibition of MAO-B increases dopamine activity and reduces hydrogen peroxide production, decreasing reactive oxygen species formation.
