MSH와 MC1R은 멜라닌 합성의 주요 조절 인자로, 피부 내 유멜라닌과 페오멜라닌의 비율을 조절하여 색소 침착에 영향을 미칩니다.
MC1R의 비활성 또는 절단형 수용체는 밝은 털색을 유발하며, 반대로 지속적으로 활성화된 수용체는 어두운 색을 나타냅니다.
