Target Information

ABL1 proto-oncogene encodes a cytoplasmic and nuclear protein tyrosine kinase involved in cell differentiation, division, adhesion, and stress response. c-Abl activity is negatively regulated by its SH3 domain; deletion of this domain converts c-Abl into an oncogene. DNA-binding activity is regulated by CDC2-mediated phosphorylation, indicating a role in the cell cycle. In chronic myelogenous leukemia and some acute lymphoblastic leukemias, c-Abl undergoes a (9;22) translocation forming the Philadelphia chromosome, fusing c-Abl with the Bcr gene. The c-Abl oncogene was first identified as the viral transforming gene of Abelson murine leukemia virus (A-MuLV). c-Abl also contributes to DNA repair regulation and apoptosis activation upon severe DNA damage.
