Target Information
GAD-65 and GAD-67, glutamate decarboxylases, catalyze the production of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). In the central nervous system, GABA acts as the main inhibitory neurotransmitter by increasing Cl⁻ conductance that inhibits neuronal firing.
GABA activates ionotropic (GABAA) and metabotropic (GABAB) receptors, and a third class called GABAC.
- GABAA and GABAC receptors: Ligand-gated ion channels, structurally and functionally distinct.
- GABAA receptor family members: GABAA Rα1–6, GABAA Rβ1–3, GABAA Rγ1–3, GABAA Rδ, GABAA Rε, GABAA Rρ1, GABAA Rρ2.
- GABAB receptor family: GABAB R1α and GABAB R1β.
- GABA transporters: GABA T-1, T-2, T-3 (also designated GAT-1, -2, -3), terminate GABA action.
