The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) family, which regulates various cellular processes such as cell growth, differentiation, mitotic cycle, and oncogenic transformation.
Two alternatively spliced transcript variants have been reported:
- Receptor-type PTP: possesses a short extracellular domain, a single transmembrane region, and two tandem intracytoplasmic catalytic domains.
- Nonreceptor-type PTP: contains a distinct hydrophilic N-terminus.
Studies in mice suggest regulatory roles in RAS-related signal transduction, cytokine-induced STAT signaling, and activation of voltage-gated K⁺ channels.
