Target Information

Smooth Muscle Actin (α-SMA) belongs to the actin family, a group of highly conserved proteins essential for cell motility, structure, and integrity. Among the isoforms (α, β, γ), α-actin is a key component of the contractile apparatus, whereas β and γ actins regulate cell motility. Smooth muscle actin is found in skeletal muscle, vessel walls, gut wall, myometrium, and myoepithelial cells of breast and salivary glands. It plays a vital role in muscle contraction, cell motility, and cytokinesis through filament formation and myosin interaction. Mutations in the ACTA2 gene are linked to familial thoracic aortic aneurysm type 6. α-SMA is abundant in vascular and visceral smooth muscle cells and also expressed in fibroblastic stress fibers during wound healing and fibrocontractive conditions. Multiple alternatively spliced variants of smooth muscle actin have been identified.
