Target Information
Smooth muscle actin belongs to the actin family of highly conserved proteins involved in cell motility, structure, and integrity. Alpha actin is a major constituent of the contractile apparatus, while beta and gamma actins regulate cell motility. Smooth muscle actin is found in skeletal muscle, vessel walls, gut wall, myometrium, and myoepithelial cells. It plays a crucial role in muscle contraction and cytoskeletal organization. Defects in the smooth muscle actin gene are associated with familial thoracic aortic aneurysm type 6. Alpha-smooth muscle actin is abundant in vascular and visceral smooth muscle cells and can appear in stress fibers during wound healing and fibrocontractive diseases. Multiple alternatively spliced variants have been identified.
