Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and play a role in protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, contrasting with prokaryotic ribosomes. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA, and their protein components vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult.
This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein involved in apoptotic pathways initiated by TNF-α, Fas ligand, and IFN-γ. The protein may bind ATP/GTP and interact functionally with mitoribosomal protein S27. Splice variants differing in the 5′ UTR exist, but both encode the same protein. Pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 1q and 2q.
