Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein involved in apoptotic pathways initiated by TNF-α, Fas ligand, and interferon-γ. The protein may bind ATP/GTP and interact with mitoribosomal protein S27. Splice variants exist but encode the same protein. Pseudogenes are found on chromosomes 1q and 2q.
