Target Information
CD146 (MCAM) is an integral membrane glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. It is expressed at cell-cell junctions in endothelial cells and other normal and malignant cell types. In addition to functioning as a calcium-independent cell adhesion molecule, CD146 acts as a signal transduction molecule that recruits Fyn kinase and mediates tyrosine phosphorylation of intracellular proteins involved in actin cytoskeleton assembly.
CD146 contributes to endothelial cell cohesion, vascular integrity, and melanoma metastasis through interactions with vascular elements. It may also play a role in neural crest cell adhesion during embryonic development and serve as a surface receptor triggering tyrosine phosphorylation of FYN and PTK2, leading to transient increases in intracellular calcium concentration.
