PER2 (Period circadian protein homolog 2)는 주로 핵 내에 존재하며, 다른 생체 시계 단백질과의 상호작용 및 인산화에 의해 핵-세포질 간 이동을 조절합니다.
PER2는 기본 헬릭스-루프-헬릭스(bHLH) 전사인자 계열에 속하며, PAC(PAS-associated C-terminal) 도메인과 두 개의 PAS(PER-ARNT-SIM) 도메인을 포함합니다.
PER2는 시계 단백질 복합체(CRY, CLOCK/NPAS2, BMAL1/2, CSNK1D/E, TIMELESS 등)의 구성 요소로서, 생체 리듬 생성과 전사 조절 루프의 음성 조절 인자로 기능합니다.
PER2는 골격근과 췌장에서 강하게 발현되며, 폐에서는 약하게 발현됩니다.
PER2 유전자 결함은 가족성 조기 수면 단계 증후군(FASPS)의 원인으로 알려져 있습니다.
