Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the pyridine nucleotide oxidoreductase family. The protein reduces thioredoxins and other substrates, playing a role in selenium metabolism and protection against oxidative stress. The functional enzyme is a homodimer using FAD as a cofactor. Each subunit contains a selenocysteine (Sec) residue required for catalytic activity, encoded by the UGA codon that typically signals translation termination. The 3′ UTR of selenocysteine-containing genes includes a SECIS element necessary for recognizing UGA as a Sec codon rather than a stop signal. Alternative splicing produces several transcript variants encoding identical or distinct isoforms.
