Target Information
BST2 (CD317, HM1.24 antigen, DAMP-2, tetherin) is an integral membrane protein involved in B-cell development and growth.
It facilitates stromal cell-dependent growth of pre-B-cell lines and is highly expressed from pro-B precursors to plasma cells, as well as in T-cells, monocytes, NK cells, DCs, and myeloma cells.
BST2 also acts as an inhibitor of retrovirus release from human cells, antagonized by the HIV-1 accessory protein Vpu.
Depletion of BST2 abolishes the viral requirement for Vpu, suggesting potential therapeutic applications for HIV/AIDS.
BST2 dysfunction is also associated with stomatitis.
