Target Information

Ubiquitin is a highly conserved protein that plays a major role in targeting cellular proteins for degradation by the 26S proteasome. It is synthesized as a precursor consisting of either polyubiquitin chains or a single ubiquitin fused to another protein.
This gene encodes a fusion protein composed of ubiquitin at the N-terminus and ribosomal protein S27a at the C-terminus. Upon expression, it is processed into free ubiquitin monomer and ribosomal protein S27a, a component of the 40S ribosomal subunit containing C4-type zinc finger domains located in the cytoplasm.
Pseudogenes derived from this gene are present in the genome. Ribosomal proteins L40 and S30 are similarly synthesized as fusion proteins with ubiquitin or ubiquitin-like proteins.
