Target Information

Ubiquitin is a highly conserved protein involved in targeting cellular proteins for degradation by the 26S proteasome. It is synthesized as a precursor protein consisting of either polyubiquitin chains or a single ubiquitin fused to an unrelated protein. The encoded fusion protein contains ubiquitin at the N terminus and ribosomal protein S27a at the C terminus. Upon expression, post-translational processing generates free ubiquitin monomer and ribosomal protein S27a, a component of the 40S ribosomal subunit. This protein contains C4-type zinc finger domains and is localized in the cytoplasm. Pseudogenes derived from this gene are present in the genome. Other ribosomal proteins such as L40 and S30 are also synthesized as fusion proteins with ubiquitin or ubiquitin-like proteins.
