Also known as PHE1B. This mitochondrial enzyme is part of the pyruvate dehydrogenase multienzyme complex (PDH). It catalyzes the first step of oxidative decarboxylation converting pyruvate to acetyl-CoA and CO₂.
Defects in PDHB cause pyruvate dehydrogenase E1-beta deficiency (PDHBD).
