Carbonic anhydrase (CA) is an enzyme that catalyzes the rapid interconversion of carbon dioxide and water into carbonic acid, protons, and bicarbonate ions. It is abundant in mammalian tissues and plays a key role in pH regulation.
CA IX, a hypoxia-inducible gene regulated by HIF-1α, is a reliable histochemical marker of hypoxia due to its membrane localization and stability.
