Apoptosis Inducing Factor (AIF)는 염색질 응축과 DNA 절단을 유도하는 단백질입니다. AIF는 미토콘드리아에 위치하며, 세포사멸이 유도될 때 핵으로 이동하여 cytochrome c와 caspase-9의 방출을 촉진합니다. 이러한 과정은 세포사멸의 주요 특징인 염색질 응축과 대규모 DNA 절단을 유발합니다. AIF는 인간과 마우스에서 높은 보존성을 보이며 널리 발현됩니다. AIF 유전자의 돌연변이는 중증 미토콘드리아 뇌병증을 유발하는 복합 산화적 인산화 결핍 6과 관련이 있습니다. 대체 스플라이싱으로 여러 전사체 변이가 존재하며, 염색체 10에 관련된 유사 유전자가 확인되었습니다.
