NOTCH3는 Drosophila melanogaster의 type I 막 단백질 Notch의 세 번째 인간 상동체로, 세포 간 신호 전달 경로를 통해 신경 발달에 중요한 역할을 합니다.
인간에서도 Notch 리간드의 상동체가 확인되었으며, NOTCH3는 Jagged1, Jagged2, Delta1과 같은 막 결합 리간드의 수용체로 작용하여 세포 운명 결정을 조절합니다.
NOTCH3의 돌연변이는 CADASIL(cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy)의 원인으로 알려져 있습니다.
