IL-1 alpha (Interleukin-1 alpha) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is encoded by the IL1A gene and signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors, shared with IL-1 beta.
IL1A is located on chromosome 2q13 and plays a crucial role in innate host defense by inducing other proinflammatory cytokines and acute-phase responses.
IL-1RA acts as a competitive inhibitor to moderate IL-1 alpha activity. This cytokine is involved in immune responses, inflammation, and hematopoiesis.
Produced as a proprotein by monocytes and macrophages, IL-1 alpha is processed and released upon cell injury to induce apoptosis.
It also regulates NF-kappaB and MAP kinase activities, stimulates IL6 and COX-2 expression, and enhances nitric oxide production.
Elevated IL-1 alpha levels are associated with chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and multiple sclerosis.
