Target Information
Occludin is a 65 kDa protein that can exist in various phosphorylated forms (up to ~82 kDa). It plays a key role in regulating tight junction localization and function. Polyunsaturated fatty acids up-regulate occludin expression, enhancing transendothelial resistance and reducing permeability to large molecules. Expression levels vary by tissue: high and continuous in brain tissue at cell-cell contacts, lower and discontinuous in non-neural tissues. Occludin structure is highly conserved across species. Under-expression of occludin and other tight junction proteins contributes to increased vascular permeability in tumor endothelia, leading to brain tumor edema.
