Glutathione peroxidases (GPXs)는 글루타티온을 이용해 과산화수소 및 유기 과산화물을 환원시키는 효소로, 다양한 조직에서 발현됩니다.
GPX1은 세포질 및 미토콘드리아에 존재하는 셀레늄 의존성 효소로 GPX 패밀리 중 최초로 발견되었습니다.
GPX2는 위장관 상피세포에서만 발현되는 장 특이적 효소이며, GPX3는 신장에서 주로 발현되어 혈중으로 분비됩니다.
GPX4는 대부분의 조직에서 발현되며, 막에 통합된 과산화지질 및 저밀도지단백(LDL) 내의 과산화지질을 환원시킬 수 있습니다.
대부분의 포유류 GPX 단백질은 활성 부위에 셀레노시스테인을 포함하지만, GPX3와 GPX5는 예외적으로 시스테인을 포함합니다.
