Target Information
The eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 (eIF-3) complex is essential for multiple steps in the initiation of protein synthesis. It associates with the 40S ribosome to recruit eIF-1, eIF-1A, eIF-2:GTP:methionyl-tRNAi, and eIF-5 to form the 43S preinitiation complex (43S PIC). The complex promotes mRNA recruitment and scanning for AUG recognition, assists in ribosomal recycling, and prevents premature 40S–60S subunit joining. eIF3e is also involved in nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) and may regulate proteasome-mediated degradation of proteins such as MCM7 and EPAS1.
