Target Information
ZEB2, initially identified as Smad interacting-protein 1, is a nuclear DNA-binding transcriptional repressor that interacts with activated SMADs. Similar to ZEB1, ZEB2 represses E-cadherin transcription and induces epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), a key process in embryonic development and wound healing. ZEB2 also protects cells from DNA damage-induced apoptosis, potentially contributing to tumor progression. It is often observed in the cytoplasm of various cancer tissues, suggesting localization regulation. Mutations in this gene are linked to Hirschsprung disease and Mowat-Wilson syndrome.
